In addition to leading a session on psychological wellbeing and relationships Amy will offer a separate session on sleep, an issue that affects many people with Parkinson’s.
If you have problems with sleep, including trouble falling or staying asleep, vivid dreams, waking up frequently during the night or excessive sleepiness during the day then Amy’s session may help by introducing tips and tricks that can help.
Studies have shown people with Parkinson’s have different sleep patterns and that their deepest periods of sleep during the night are shorter and interrupted more often than people without Parkinson’s.
Often this is made worse by medications that may wear off in the night, causing tremor, painful stiffness or other symptoms to return and disrupt your sleep.
Fragmented sleep is also exacerbated by how often some people with Parkinson’s find themselves waking up often during the night to use the toilet because of the changes in the bladder that come with Parkinson’s.
Amy says “Sleep problems can affect multiple areas of a person’s life, but there are simple things that people can do that can make a difference and improve their overall quality of sleep”.
Fighting Fit is an innovative residential weekend programme for younger and working-age people with Parkinson’s that encourages self-awareness and helps each participant to take greater control of their life. The aim is to provide information and sign-posting, to share experiences and discuss the practical and emotional impact of living and working with Parkinson’s.
